HSMC Adoption Procedures

·         An adoption application is required for all adoptions. The application consists of background information, references, and general animal care. Applications may take 24 to 48 hours to process.

  • According to VA state law; animals that have not been spayed or neutered can only be adopted by residents of Montgomery, Pulaski, Floyd, Roanoke or Giles counties.

·         If your application is approved, an adoption contract requiring proper care of the animal must be signed. NOTE: Any animal adopted from the Humane Society of Montgomery County may never be sold or traded. If you are no longer able to care for the animal, the Humane Society will try to assist you with placement and/or will take the animal back into the shelter if possible. However, if you do place the animal in another home, you must contact the shelter with the name, address and phone number of the new owners.

·         All animals at the shelter have received their first distemper vaccines and their first deworming. They may be due for further vaccinations and deworming depending on their age and how long they have been at the shelter. Adopters are required to give all follow up vaccinations and treatments at your veterinarians office.

·         Adoption fees are based on age and sex of the animal, and are explained in the following paragraphs:
