How Do I Adopt?

Our adoptions are done by appointment. To adopt from HSMC, please fill out and submit an adoption application. We cannot hold any animal while processing your application. Applications are for you, not the cat/kitten you are interested in adopting.

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO FILL OUT THE ENTIRE APPLICATION. INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS CANNOT BE PROCESSED.

Like you, we are eager to find new homes for our animals as quickly as possible. To help the process along here are some things you can do:

If you rent your home, check with your landlord about the pet policy. Yes, we will call them to verify the pet policy. Please make sure to list the address where you currently live. If you are a student, we need the address where the cat/kitten will live. If you are unsure, please call the shelter at 540-382-1166 BEFORE you submit an application. Please note that incorrect information will result in the denial of your application so please contact us with any questions BEFORE you submit an application.

Make sure ALL members of the household are ready for a new addition. Check with all of your roommates to be sure they are ready to share their space with a cat/kitten.

Make sure all animals currently in the household have current vaccinations. This is important for both the new and current pets in the home.

Be sure you are financially prepared to care for an animal. Food, veterinary care, flea control, etc. adds up quickly!

Other important questions to ask yourself before you think about adopting a pet:

Are you moving in the next year? If so, are you prepared to give up a place you may want to live in due to a restrictive pet policy? If you can't find a place that will allow your pet, what will you do?

Are you prepared to deal with the good and bad that come with owning an animal? Cats scratch couches, eat plants, jump on counters. Please do not adopt an animal if you are not committed to working through their issues/bad habits.

Are you prepared to allow time (sometimes several months) for the animals you currently own to accept a new animal in your home? They do not always love each other right away!

PETS ADD FUN, COMPANIONSHIP AND LOVE TO OUR LIVES, BUT THEY ARE ALSO A BIG RESPONSIBILITY. CHOOSING TO ADD A PET TO YOUR FAMILY IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION. PLEASE BE CERTAIN YOU ARE READY FOR THE COMMITMENT BECAUSE FAILED ADOPTIONS ARE DIFFICULT FOR EVERYONE- ESPECIALLY THE ANIMAL.
