THE CATS AND DOGS SAY THANK YOU!!
While things are pretty good here at the shelter, they definitely improved
recently. Due to your tremendous response to the cat kennel fundraiser, we now
have 21 brand new cat kennels. Each kennel has a living area with a shelf (very
good for naps) and a separate potty area – how cool is that!! The shelter staff
tells us these kennels are a huge improvement over our old cages since they have
solid walls to keep us from sneezing on each other and are much easier to clean.
Please come by and see our new digs at your first opportunity. The dogs also
benefited from your response since they got some new chain link fencing and
gates in the big dog run. All of us appreciate your continued support and say
THANK YOU!

HELP US SAVE YOUR MONEY
With the cost of postage going up again, please take a moment to make sure you
are not getting duplicate mailings from us. We try hard to keep the mailing list
error free but with 2700+ names it is hard to be perfect. If you are getting
more than one mailing (not intentionally), please let us know so we can save the
printing and mailing costs. We appreciate your help.

HSMC’s Power(s) Couple
Joe and Linda, of course! Among the first people to sign up for HSMC concessions
are Joe and Linda Powers. They help cover the front – the money place! – taking
it in during the games and totaling it up afterwards, always with a sense of
humor, which really helps during football, with its long lines and enthusiastic
fans. With Linda covering the “math” angle and Joe weighing in on “planning”,
the HSMC has nary a worry with these two at the front!
After retiring last year, Joe has devoted even more time to the cause. At the
NIT games in March, we tried to give Joe a small break since he had worked the
first two games. Nuttin’ doin’! He suggested that he come in early and help set
up for the last – and biggest – NIT game. Boy, are we glad we took him up on his
offer! He got us through the initial rush, then like the Lone Ranger of yore,
departed before we could adequately thank him. So thanks, Joe!
Thanks to both Joe & Linda for years of dedicated service for the shelter
critters.

OUR PET-A-THON ON THE VT CAMPUS REACHED
MANY STUDENTS AND ALSO RAISED SOME MONEY!
There is no greater satisfaction than seeing the joy your four-legged friend can
bring to others. That is what took place on the VT campus on April 22nd and
23rd, when 25 dogs along with a rabbit and a guinea pig, participated in our two
day “pet-a-thon” on the Drillfield. Hundreds of students stopped by over the two
days to get their “pet-fix” and meet and greet the dogs, and also donate dollars
to support the HSMC shelter. Our participants ranged from the 160lb. “Oliver” –
a magnificent St. Bernard from a rescue group, to teeny-tiny “Moby” a Min-Pin
mix from the HSMC shelter. We had smooth coats and wiry, short coats and very
hairy, curly tails and funny clip cuts, soft brown eyes and piercing blue – all
sorts of breeds and mixes were represented, and nearly all had been adopted from
shelter or rescue organizations. They did a wonderful job as ambassadors for all
the shelter cats and dogs looking for great forever homes. Thank you so much to
all two- and four-legged participants who helped to make this event a financial
and public relations success, and GREAT BIG WOOFS to the Alpha Sigma Phi
fraternity who made it all possible, by starting this annual event 6 years ago
and continuing to invite us to campus each year. Check out the website in the
near future, where we will be posting fun photos from the event!

Greetings from the Second Time Around
store!
Thanks for all the donations over the past few weeks. Our sales continue to do
well, so we need even more of your treasures. Please consider us when you do
your spring cleaning. You can make donations at our store from 9:00 to 3:00
Wednesday through Saturday. I would like to thank Dan Teates, Tom Teates, and
Tal Roberts for generously giving their time and the use of their trucks for the
store. I also want to thank Matt Davis for his many hours spent renovating our
restroom/lounge and all of the other projects he continues to do around the
store. All of us really appreciate this. I look forward to seeing you at the
store!
Alan Dean, store coordinator

Special Thanks
Many tail wags to Rachel Williams
for collecting donations for the animals instead of gifts at her 15th birthday
party. Happy Birthday Rachel and thank you for thinking of the animals!!
The shelter cats appreciate Wynne Darden saving up her money and making a
donation to help purchase the new cat kennels. Thanks for wanting to help the
animals!!
Thanks to the Blacksburg Junior Women’s Club for their generous donation to help
purchase the new cat kennels!
A big thank you to Rachel Barnhill for doing a supply drive for the shelter. Her
initiative to help the animals is greatly appreciated and shows what a
difference one person can make. Rachel also helped at several concession stands
so she has truly been an HSMC supporter. Congratulations to Rachel on her
graduation from Virginia Tech!
Blake Parker decided to help HSMC as part of his civics class. He did a
neighborhood collection of supplies to help the animals. Thanks to Blake for his
efforts and we hope his teacher reads this and gives him an “A”!
For her 10th birthday party, Meredith McCann decided to collect money and
supplies for the animals in lieu of gifts. The animals are now big time
supporters of birthday parties especially when they get the gifts. Thanks for
helping the animals Meredith and Happy Birthday!!
