How Do I Adopt?

So you've come to the shelter and found a friend you'd like to give a great home to? Fantastic! This page will give you an overview of our adoption process, so you can be prepared to give all the pertinent information we may need from you. First, we'll look over a view basic rules that apply to all adoptions through the HSMC. Then we'll move on to the different adoption fees, and which pertain to your specific case! First, the ground rules:

Application1. An adoption application is required for ALL adoptions.
- This application is a core part of our policy. Applications can take 24-48 hours to process from the time of their submission. If your application is approved, an adoption contract requiring proper care of the animal must be signed before we permit adoption.
NOTE: At this time, applications for adoption are only available at the HSMC. Please come in to fill out an application.

2. According to VA state law; animals that have not been spayed or neutered can only be adopted by residents of Montgomery, Pulaski, Floyd, Roanoke or Giles counties.

3. Adopters are required to give all follow up vaccinations and treatments at your veterinarians office.
- All animals at the shelter have received their first distemper vaccines and their first deworming. They may be due for further vaccinations and deworming depending on their age and how long they have been at the shelter.
